About Shobu Karatedo
Based in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood, Shobu Karatedo is a boutique dojo teaching traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu karatedo. Training covers basic techniques, forms, analysis, applications, pre-arranged and free sparring, plus self-defense techniques. Okinawan kobudo, or classical weaponry, is studied alongside empty-handed practice. Instruction also explores footwork, timing, distance, angles, and individual expression. The dojo currently practices on a flexible schedule at Kiku Matsu Aikido Dojo, mostly on Friday mornings, rather than meeting at fixed dates and times. Members are encouraged to stay connected and practice independently outside dojo sessions, while training centers on learning the system and building community. Shobu Karatedo is the Chicago branch of the World Matsubayashi-ryu Karatedo Association, headquartered in Okinawa, Japan.
