Traditional Shotokan
Practice focuses on traditional Shotokan karate techniques and forms.
Chicago Shotokan provides ongoing traditional Shotokan karate practice with an emphasis on self-defense. Training covers kihon, including basic blocks, punches, kicks, and stances; kata, or prearranged forms; and kumite, or sparring. Techniques include blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations. Practices are physically and mentally challenging, with character development also identified as a primary goal. The ongoing format has no sessions, semesters, or seasons, and members practice year-round. Beginners are welcome, regardless of age, sex, or current physical condition, and prospective members may try a couple of practices free of charge. Chicago Shotokan has served the area since 1987 and practices at the Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center in West Rogers Park, Chicago.
