Since 1985, the Buena Vista Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians of California has been federally recognized as a tribe. Its Rancheria land is in Amador County, just outside Buena Vista. The Tribe's history includes the federal purchase of the land in 1927 for landless Indian tribes in California. It maintains a Tribal Council and administrative staff, and its areas of activity include natural resources and community life. The Upusani Cultural Center and Jesse Flying Cloud Pope Foundation are among its tribal entities; the foundation supports Native youth, culture, and community. Other entities include a tribal court, gas station, smoke shop, and Harrah's Northern California Casino. Tribal offices are located in Sacramento.
