Free books by mail
Books are selected to fulfill requests from incarcerated people.
Based in Philadelphia, Books Through Bars is a community service organization that sends free books and educational resources to incarcerated people in Pennsylvania and five other mid-Atlantic states. It has served people in prison since 1987. Each month, the organization receives about 700 letters requesting books. Volunteers select titles from its library to match requests, then mail the books with an invoice and a note of solidarity. Nearly all books are donated, and the organization also invites the public to donate books, volunteer, or contribute funds. Its work includes distributing about 2,100 books monthly, sending large donations to prison libraries, and hosting packing sessions and service-learning programs. Books Through Bars also runs Address This!, a political correspondence program for participants, and coordinates exhibitions of artwork by incarcerated people.
