Industrial Arts Training
Youth learn blacksmithing and welding through creative projects.
Blacksmithing and welding are central to IAMA's youth programs in the Twin Cities. Industrial Arts Mentorship for All is an accessible learning experience for underrepresented youth, with a supportive studio in North Minneapolis. Students develop technical skills while creating and exhibiting artwork, building friendships and community through the making process. Programs include youth field trip demonstrations, a three-month pre-apprenticeship, and workshops for queer youth. Field trips for ages 12 and older include demonstrations in blacksmithing, torch cutting, and welding, along with discussion of educational and career pathways. IAMA also offers programming for girls, young women, and gender-diverse youth. Its pre-apprenticeship combines metalworking, professional and leadership development, shop maintenance, and exposure to artists and tradespeople.
