Opened in 1973
Riverfront Plaza opened to the public on April 27, 1973.
The Belvedere's Riverfront Plaza opened to the public on April 27, 1973, atop what is now the city's largest parking garage. The downtown Louisville space has been used by visitors and for events connected with the YUM! Center, the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, and conferences. A renovation project aims to reimagine the plaza as a new destination. As of February 2026, construction in the garage is expected to begin in Fall 2026. The city is gathering community input on what people would like to see and do in a more modern, updated Belvedere. Public use of the site was proposed as early as 1931, and Mayor Frank Burke dedicated it to Louisville's children.
