A youth maritime education center. Chicago Maritime Arts Center offers boat building classes, boating skills instruction, and marine ecology classes for Chicago youth ages 11-17. Its Mariners in Training program provides a pathway toward boating jobs, while camps and hands-on projects introduce participants to the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Programs cover water and safety, tool use, teamwork, communication, STEM, life skills, and maritime arts through goal-based activities. The center also provides boating skills resources and opportunities to volunteer. Its programming is designed to give young people practical experience with boatbuilding creativity, water recreation, environmental stewardship, and alternative vocational opportunities. A boating skills class is scheduled at Lathrop Homes during the weeks of July 25 through August 1, 2025.
