Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation

A historical education foundation. It develops, delivers, and preserves information about the Civil War in the Upper Midwest, with a focus on Illinois, Chicago, and Camp Douglas. The foundation maintains a repository of historical materials, including artifacts, photographs, letters, journals, and diaries, and shares information with educators, historians, and other interested people. It has created a traveling exhibit about Camp Douglas for loan to interested institutions and organizations. Camp Douglas served as an Illinois military installation and Union mustering center beginning in 1861, and later operated as a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp until 1865. The foundation's work addresses the camp's role in Chicago's economy and Civil War history.
