Shipboard education
Students learn through immersive programs aboard a tall ship.
Based in Boston, World Ocean School is a community education nonprofit that provides immersive learning programs aboard its tall ship. Students from diverse backgrounds take part in hands-on sailing and ocean science activities, with curriculum covering STEM subjects and social-emotional skills such as resilience, trust, and courage. The programs serve more than 600 students each year. Learning takes place aboard ship, where students participate in sailing and build practical skills through shared work. World Ocean School also offers adults the opportunity to join guest crew on a weeklong passage aboard the 137-foot schooner Denis Sullivan. Guest crew help raise and handle sails, stand watch, and take part in daily shipboard work; sailing experience is not required, and this passage is for adults 18 and older.
