How Much Do Portrait Commissions Cost?
This guide covers typical US portrait commission rates, the choices that affect the final price, and how to compare quotes.
Price ranges for common jobs
| Job | What it involves | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Small, simple portrait | One person, head and shoulders | $150 - $300 |
| Medium custom portrait | One or two people, more detail | $300 - $800 |
| Large or detailed portrait | Several people, full figures or complex setting | $800 - $2,000+ |
Ranges are typical, not quotes - the price for your job depends on scope and location, so always confirm with the provider.
What drives the cost up or down
Price depends on the artist's experience, medium, size, and level of detail. Oil and other labor-intensive techniques often cost more than a simple digital or pencil portrait. More subjects, full-body poses, custom backgrounds, and revisions can add work.
Originals that need framing or shipping may carry extra costs. Location can affect rates too, especially when the artist meets the client in person or works in a higher-cost city.
Ways to pay less
Set a clear budget and ask whether a smaller size, simpler background, or digital format would suit the purpose. Share good reference photos and agree on the number of revisions, delivery date, framing, and shipping before work begins.
Compare quotes for the same size, medium, and scope, and check what each includes. Quotes from checked, reviewed providers on Reedleys are easier to trust when comparing against these ranges.
Common cost questions
Many ask for an upfront deposit to reserve time and cover initial work. Confirm when the balance is due and what happens if either side cancels.
Artists may be quoting different sizes, media, detail levels, revision allowances, or delivery terms. Compare the included work and materials, not just the total.
Yes. Ask whether the quote covers framing, protective packaging, delivery, and any applicable taxes before you approve the commission.
