Opened on October 17, 1891, the Huntington Free Library and Reading Room serves the Bronx through its library collections, programs, and lectures. It is a privately endowed, not-for-profit institution governed by a Board of Trustees and run entirely by volunteers. Its resources include a Bronx collection and an online collection, alongside materials for reading, study, and education. The library also hosts programs and lectures for the community. It was incorporated in 1892 by railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington for the then Town of Westchester, before the area was known as the Bronx. Visits are currently available by reservation only.
