A mosquito abatement district. It is an independent local government entity organized to reduce mosquito nuisance and protect the public from mosquito-borne diseases. The Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District provides service across 1,058 square miles in central and eastern Fresno County, including Selma and surrounding communities. Its work includes monitoring mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases, then using suitable control measures to reduce mosquito populations. Residents can contact the District to request service. The District also offers prevention information on identifying mosquitoes, finding potential breeding sources, and responding to mosquito breeding. When adult mosquito populations are high or mosquito-borne disease is detected, it may control adult mosquitoes or reduce the potential for disease transmission. The District is not currently conducting sterile insect technique releases.
