Mandarin and Cantonese
Students can study Chinese in either language.
A nonprofit language school. Founded in 1971, Staten Island Chinese School teaches Chinese to students in Staten Island through Mandarin and Cantonese classes. Its curriculum uses textbooks with traditional characters from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, along with supplementary materials from those regions. The school has also edited textbooks for young children in beginning classes. Traditional Chinese is the official writing format, while some Mandarin classes introduce simplified writing. Mandarin instruction uses Hanyu Pinyin, and the school notes that this helps students prepare for Chinese SAT II and AP examinations. In-person classes are held at Staten Island Technical High School. The school accepts new enrollments for the 2026-2027 academic year.
