Scholarship program
Grants for college and postgraduate studies.
Scholarships for college and postgraduate study are one of the society's longstanding programs. Founded in 1801 and legally established in 1835, St. David's Society of the State of New York began as a benevolent society helping needy immigrants from Wales. Its support included medical care at Presbyterian Hospital and burial plots at Green-Wood Cemetery, which remain available. The society also awards the Hopkins Bronze Medal to recognize lifetime achievements by Welsh people and Welsh Americans; about 50 medals have been presented. More than 200 scholarship awards have supported students' college and postgraduate studies. Emergency grants are available for particular situations causing distress to people of Welsh ancestry, with applications accepted directly or by referral.
