Rise Above
Image created by Karen Simon after 9/11.
Created after 9/11, Karen Simon's "Rise Above" image appeared on two donated billboards near the Lincoln and Midtown tunnels. The project began with posters she distributed to local West Village businesses, aiming to address feelings of fear and hopelessness in the days after the attacks. The image was seen by hundreds of thousands of people over an eight-month period. It is held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Library of Congress, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. In 2011, the billboard was posted outside the Queens entrance to the Midtown Tunnel as a memorial. Simon Does is associated with Karen Simon's creative work and public art project in New York City.
