Docked museum ship
A retired Coast Guard lighthouse tender open for tours.
LILAC is a docked museum ship. It is a retired Coast Guard cutter built in 1933 that carried supplies to lighthouses and maintained buoys until 1972. The vessel is America's only surviving steam-powered lighthouse tender and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can tour the ship and view art and historical exhibits at no charge. LILAC also hosts cultural and educational activities, including programs for children and special events; reservations may be required for some events. The ship is undergoing restoration while open to visitors, and touring includes climbing ladders and navigating low overheads and trip hazards. LILAC is owned and operated by the nonprofit Lilac Preservation Project, an educational organization.
