Helps families facing special needs and mental health challenges.
A nonprofit community and social services organization. CHDFS, Inc. supports individuals, families, and communities, with services shaped by the needs of people with special needs and mental health diagnoses. Founded in 2002 by Dr. Julio Barros, the organization grew from a parent-led support group and later became a 501(c)(3) corporation. Its work has included respite care, family support, advocacy, and services through the OMH Waiver Program in Manhattan and across New York City. CHDFS also helps families access culturally sensitive tools and services while promoting inclusion, dignity, and meaningful quality of life. The organization continues its work in New York City following Dr. Barros's death in 2022.
