About WriteGirl
Creative writing workshops and mentoring help teens develop their voices, creativity, critical thinking and leadership skills. The organization serves teen girls and gender-expansive youth through a core mentoring program, with professional writers volunteering as mentors. Monthly workshops during the school year explore genres such as poetry, screenwriting, journalism and songwriting. Teens and mentors also meet for shorter sessions twice a month. Online programming is open to participants from around the world, alongside local in-person programs in the Greater Los Angeles area. Founded in 2001, WriteGirl serves more than 700 teens and young adults annually, mainly from Los Angeles neighborhoods. It also offers tools for teachers and publishes writing by its community.
