Ensemble company
Includes actors, directors, writers, and improvisers.
The Gift Theater's giftED. program provides professional theater training for high school students in traditionally underserved Chicago communities. Conceived in 1997 by Michael Patrick Thornton and William Nedved, the company grew around an ensemble of actors, directors, writers, and improvisers. It presents new plays and operates In The Works, a reading series for local playwrights staged on Chicago's Northwest side. Its 25th Anniversary Season includes Hayward, a world premiere by ensemble member Netta Walker that reimagines Hamlet and Electra through the story of a family facing grief and unresolved feelings. The production is scheduled at Steppenwolf's 1700 Theater from October 14 to November 22, 2026. The company's work centers on ensemble theater and new writing.
