Vendor Work
Vendors resell magazines and keep profits plus tips.
In Chicago, StreetWise is a nonprofit community and social services organization connecting journalism, income opportunities, and support for people experiencing poverty or homelessness. Its weekly magazine creates a way for vendors to earn immediate income with dignity: vendors buy copies for $1.15, resell them for $3, and keep profits and tips. StreetWise also operates a drop-in center with daily meals and pantry items, emergency and seasonal clothing, toiletries, hygiene kits, and help accessing public benefits. Staff assist with birth certificates, state identification, and Social Security cards, while offering case management and referrals for housing, healthcare, legal services, and other community resources. Community engagement and vendor orientation are also part of its programs.
