NeighborSpace

In Chicago, NeighborSpace is a nonprofit urban land trust that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of community groups. It takes on property ownership responsibilities, including basic liability insurance and access to water, to help groups focus on gardening and community-building. The organization provides permanent protection against potential development and establishes partnerships that maintain local community management and control. Support also includes stewardship assistance, technical help, education, tool lending, project planning, fundraising support, troubleshooting, and links to support networks. Its Stewardship Mini Grant Program offers resources and opportunities for garden sites. NeighborSpace-protected gardens give residents places to grow food, enjoy nature, and gather in their neighborhoods.
