National Archives at Chicago preserves permanent records created by federal agencies and courts in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Its holdings include naturalization and court records, Bureau of Indian Affairs records, Chinese Exclusion Act case files from Chicago and St. Paul, and maritime records. Genealogists and other researchers can use finding aids, ordering information, online research tools, and databases. The research room is open by appointment on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with boxes pulled in advance. Onsite and offsite reference services currently continue as the facility prepares to close in the next few years. Educator resources, volunteer and internship opportunities, and visit-planning information are also available.
