Friends of Firefighters provides free, confidential mental health counseling, peer support, and wellness services for active and retired FDNY firefighters and their family members. Services are available in person and online through HIPAA-compliant platforms, and remain independent from the FDNY. Counseling and peer support address concerns including stress, anxiety, insomnia, trauma, relationships, family life, and challenges after retirement. The organization also offers wellness support for the FDNY community. It began after the September 11, 2001 attacks, when firefighters requested mental health services. Friends of Firefighters is headquartered in a restored firehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
