Dime museum
A format popularized by P.T. Barnum in the 1800s.
Wax figures of famous monsters and a life-size giant gorilla are among the displays in the Museum of the Weird's Sfanthor's Chamber of Horrors. The downtown Austin museum presents oddities including monsters, zombies, mummies, shrunken heads, and the Fiji mermaid. It describes itself as one of the last dime museums, a format popularized by P.T. Barnum in the 1800s. The exhibits include reproductions as well as actual oddities. The museum is inside Lucky Lizard Curios and Gifts, in Austin's 6th Street entertainment district. The owners opened it after deciding some of the shop's unusual items were too interesting to sell. Visitors can also enter the gift shop. The museum has stairs and is not fully wheelchair accessible.
