Hand Tool Woodworking
Children learn woodworking through hands-on use of real tools.
Kinderwood is an Austin education program focused on woodworking for children. It uses real wood and hand tools in a learning environment led by Scott Carro, a lifelong educator and avid woodworker who previously taught in an outdoor classroom at Athena Montessori Academy. Children create projects such as boxes, bookshelves, dump trucks, push cars, castles, toys, and saws. Classes are hands-on, with students making individual or group wooden pieces under instruction. The program has relocated from Austin to New York, where it continues sharing hand tool woodworking with a new community. Its past class gallery includes projects made by children ages four through six, along with a group class project from the 2017-18 school year.
